Joe Wieland, a former Yokohama BayStars, for the Uni-President Lions of Taiwan Professional Baseball (CPBL), has retired from active play.
Wieland was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 4th round (123rd overall) in 2008. He was traded to the Padres in 2011 and made his Major League debut in 2012. He later played for the Dodgers and Mariners via trade before signing with the DeNA BayStars in the 2016 offseason.
In his first year in Japan in 2017, he not only marked 10 wins but also showcased extraordinary batting talent, hitting 3 home runs. He excited fans with both his pitching and hitting, contributing to the team’s advancement to the Japan Series.
After becoming a free agent in December 2018, he played two seasons for the Kia Tigers in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). Subsequently, he moved between the Cubs and Rays minor league systems, and independent leagues in the U.S., before joining the Uni-President Lions this season.
